La Timba Saga

Storytelling Production

La Timba Saga

Timba is a Cuban rhythm that was popular in the 1990s during what is known as the “special period” in Cuba, referring to the economic crisis that ensued on the island after the fall of the Soviet Union and in the face of U.S. sanctions. The musical style is heavily influenced by jazz, funk, rumba, and son.

Through multimedia storytelling, La Timba Saga will explore Timba from the perspective of a Black Cuban musician who was born and raised on the island, heavily influenced by Timba during his childhood, and later became a singer in one of Cuba’s leading Timba orchestras. This project will delve into the music and explore the wider context of the movement: its social impact, its economic repercussions, and analysis of its lyrical style. La Timba Saga, will bring audience members into the homes and studios of the founders of this musical movement, offering a more intimate perspective from which to understand the monumental musical movement they created, the musical innovations they forged, and the ways they impacted a new generation of musicians both on and off the island of Cuba.
